New happenings with Lucas

I have been SO busy with our event and other things to keep the blog going.  There is a lot going on but I am going to try and not let that keep me from letting you know along the way how the one who started this all, is doing!

I am over the moon with his progress!  He has been talking up a storm over the last few weeks and is SO proud of every new word that he can say!  He'll just announce what something is and look into my eyes to wait for me to jump, and scream, and wohoo for him!  LOL

I am trying to put together a video of him so that I can show you the difference in him in only a few short months!  I can't tell you as a Mother how much it means to be able to finally "GET" what he is saying to me!  He would try so hard to talk.  His mouth would move but his brain just couldn't get the word to come out.  I could see the frustration in his face to even say "Drink".

He'll sign the word "More", and can say "Juice".  When I jump right up to get it for him.  The smile that is on his face is priceless!  You can just see the relief in him knowing that his Mommy understands him, FINALLY!

His outbursts are calming down, of course I'm sure, because his frustration level is starting to go away.

I finally feel like we are getting somewhere with him and it is WONDERFUL!  YAY

I had to share our wonderful news with you before I did one more thing today!

No greater feeling!

For almost 3 years now, our love of life, has struggled so badly to talk, communicate, express himself.  He just couldn't.  If he wanted a drink, it wasn't something that he could say or show me.  I found ways of figuring out what he needed and when.  Sometimes it was easy and sometimes it was hard.  I write this with tears rolling down my face, not sad, but happy!  Lucas has come so far and has been doing absolutely wonderful with trying to express his needs and wants. Every day we see something new with him.

He is able to say quite a few words now.  He still isn't able to put two words together that often but when he needs a drink, he will bring me his cup, put it into my hand,  and say duce!  If he wants a cookie, he is able to say cookie!  So many other words have been flowing that I never thought I would hear from his mouth.  Even when he say's his alphabet the letters seem to be getting clearer.

His therapist left him today and for almost a year we have been trying to get him to wave bye bye to them and today, in slow motion with his little arm and hand, he waved bye, bye.  He was happy to see how proud we were of him.  This was a HUGE step that we had been waiting so long to see him do.

To some this is such an insignificant event but to me it means he's getting it, he is getting it all!  It's been a slow process, a LOT of therapy, but he's getting it.  He has 6 hours of therapy a week, with 4 different therapists.  I feel like I am running out of time with them because Early Intervention only stays with them until they are three.  I NEED them to see what their efforts with him has done and it is wonderful for them to watch the changes in him.

Tonight, when I put him down to sleep, as his little eyes started to close.  He whispered in a soft voice, LOVE!  I know exactly what he meant, I only dreamed of hearing him say it a billion times since he was born!  I grabbed him up hugged him as hard as I could and told him that I loved him too!  There simply is no greater feeling than hearing your child tell you that he LOVES YOU! It just makes it even more special that I heard it from Lucas!

Fireworks were a hit!

We were at the pool on the 4th and I ran into a neighbor that was pregnant around the same time I was was with Lucas.  She was due three months before I was.  She has an amazing little boy and we both couldn't believe how big they both got.  We starting talking and amazingly enough I found out that her son has been dealing with SPD along with a few other medical problems as well.  The more and more I talk to people about this illness in hopes to get the word out the more I find that it has affected them in some way as well.   She was just as angry as I was about there not being help for our kids like there should be without that Autism diagnosis.   It was nice talking with someone who understood the anxiety I was feeling about the day in general.

I was really surprised but Lucas really loved the fireworks!  We were able to see them right behind our house in the field across the street.  He played in his favorite dirt in the baseball field and he was just fine!  I think it helped that he was in his own comfortable place too!  There weren't many people just our neighbors and he knew most of them so he felt safe.  I stressed all week long thinking he was going to freak out and of course only I did! LOL

I have to say I am SO proud of Lucas today.  I found these picture cards with words on the backs and went through all of them with Lucas.  He was telling me the words of almost all of the pictures!  I was in shock that he was doing it.  Mind you his therapists say the only consistent thing about Lucas is his inconsistency so he may not say them again but the fact that somewhere in there he knows makes me feel so good inside!

Last day of school!

Good Morning all!

We have some really exciting reviews and giveaways coming up soon so keep your eyes out! Please check out the free offers and sales that I listed for today, we have some really good ones!

Today is the last day of school for my older son Charlie! Our whole dynamics in the house is going to change after today! We have yet another therapist starting next week for Lucas. That brings his total therapy for the week to 6 hours! Two behavior therapists two times per week each, one OT, and one speech for one hour per visit.

As Charlie's school year ends I can't help but think that in a few short months my little bug, Lucas will be going to school. I can't believe that at only 3 he will be starting his first day of school, getting on his own little bus : ( I know that he needs it desperately but it doesn't make it any easier to think about. Ok, I'm having panic attacks now so I'll stop thinking about it. LOL

Here is wishing that all of our members have a wonderful day!

The Journey continues..........................

Our pool opened last weekend and Lucas is like a new man since he's been able to go swimming!  I'm blessed that he loves the water because I know a lot of our sensory children don't.  I get it and realize how lucky we are.

He was taking commands today which is a HUGE issue for us.  We were playing together with a new Lego set and I told him to get the caterpillar part that was on the floor in the next room.   I said it loud, clear,  and slow,  "Lucas, look (pointing to the lego piece), go get your caterpillar and bring it to Mommy!"  He looked right at it, walked over to it, picked it up, and brought it to me!  Most parents who don't have sensory kids can never understand just how huge this is!  That moment told me "HE GETS IT!"   For that moment, he was in a place, to really understand what I was saying, process what I asked him to do, and was able to perform the task at hand from beginning to end.

Lucas also told us "doughnut mouth" today, as he pointed to his mouth! OMG!  He was saying that he wanted a doughnut in his mouth!  We all stopped what we were doing and stood with our mouths opened in shock!

How this face could have put me through what he did for the last 24 hours is beyond me?! I can handle meltdowns. I almost feel like I'm a professional at it. I've been trained by professionals to deal with them so why was I in tears today? Lucas didn't sleep for two days! Which means, I didn't sleep for two days. He has never slept right but every once in a while he goes through these times where he doesn't sleep at all for reasons beyond me. Because of the stomach bug a few days ago, he didn't really eat that much for the last few days, which is another normal issue, so that in itself was enough to bring on a meltdown. The combination of the sleep deprivation and hunger from being sick made me witness a whole new level of meltdown that I didn't know existed! It was so bad that I actually called and took him to the pediatrician to make sure there wasn't something seriously wrong with him. He's has meltdowns all of the time but they've never lasted more than an hour. This one lasted for 24 hours with no sleep! My hands were shaking it was so bad. He has a molar tooth that just broke through the gum. He is ultra sensitive to pain and she said it could be the cause of the entire event. When he gets like this it breaks my heart! I just want to comfort him like most Mothers can comfort their children but he is inconsolable. I think because he can't communicate it frustrates him even more. He kept saying Boo Boo, hup, hup! (hup is help) That's as far as it goes. He can't tell you were he hurts, or even point to where it hurts. He just stares and says the same thing over and over again. I think it overwhelms me so much because as a Mother I should automatically know but I don't. As hard as I try to understand what he's trying to say I just can't figure it out.

This is the reason why I started this blog.  To let other parents know what I've been through so they know that they aren't alone and to get responses and support from parents who've gone through it and made it out alive!  LOL

NOTE TO SELF:  STOP ASKING GOD FOR PATIENCE!

Mom Guilt

I love my children so much but can't help but feel so guilty because of the joy that I felt today to be away from them for a few hours.  I know that sounds horrible but sometimes I just need a break from them to regenerate myself.  I went on a belated Mother's day lunch with my Mother and Mother in law.  We had such a nice time.  I actually starting getting nervous butterflies in my stomach on the way home because I new that the day would just be beginning.

I remember crying everyday, praying, that Lucas would even want me to hold him that day.  He's not a very affectionate baby.  When I got home today, he begged to get down from his chair and ran over screaming, Lo Nannie, Lo Nannie (Hello Mommy).  Not many parents understand how big it is to have your speech impaired child say anything let alone lo Nannie!   Because I was able to get away for a little while today I was able to appreciate those words all the more from him.
