Fireworks were a hit!

We were at the pool on the 4th and I ran into a neighbor that was pregnant around the same time I was was with Lucas.  She was due three months before I was.  She has an amazing little boy and we both couldn't believe how big they both got.  We starting talking and amazingly enough I found out that her son has been dealing with SPD along with a few other medical problems as well.  The more and more I talk to people about this illness in hopes to get the word out the more I find that it has affected them in some way as well.   She was just as angry as I was about there not being help for our kids like there should be without that Autism diagnosis.   It was nice talking with someone who understood the anxiety I was feeling about the day in general.

I was really surprised but Lucas really loved the fireworks!  We were able to see them right behind our house in the field across the street.  He played in his favorite dirt in the baseball field and he was just fine!  I think it helped that he was in his own comfortable place too!  There weren't many people just our neighbors and he knew most of them so he felt safe.  I stressed all week long thinking he was going to freak out and of course only I did! LOL

I have to say I am SO proud of Lucas today.  I found these picture cards with words on the backs and went through all of them with Lucas.  He was telling me the words of almost all of the pictures!  I was in shock that he was doing it.  Mind you his therapists say the only consistent thing about Lucas is his inconsistency so he may not say them again but the fact that somewhere in there he knows makes me feel so good inside!

I am so happy for you that you reconnected with your neighbor. While it's unfortunate that her son also is living with SPD, maybe you two can help support each other.

And great job Lucas with the picture cards! My daughter is very inconsistent too. She's like her momma. One day she will count perfectly to 10. The next day? Not so much! I think that is normal for any kid!
