New happenings with Lucas

I have been SO busy with our event and other things to keep the blog going.  There is a lot going on but I am going to try and not let that keep me from letting you know along the way how the one who started this all, is doing!

I am over the moon with his progress!  He has been talking up a storm over the last few weeks and is SO proud of every new word that he can say!  He'll just announce what something is and look into my eyes to wait for me to jump, and scream, and wohoo for him!  LOL

I am trying to put together a video of him so that I can show you the difference in him in only a few short months!  I can't tell you as a Mother how much it means to be able to finally "GET" what he is saying to me!  He would try so hard to talk.  His mouth would move but his brain just couldn't get the word to come out.  I could see the frustration in his face to even say "Drink".

He'll sign the word "More", and can say "Juice".  When I jump right up to get it for him.  The smile that is on his face is priceless!  You can just see the relief in him knowing that his Mommy understands him, FINALLY!

His outbursts are calming down, of course I'm sure, because his frustration level is starting to go away.

I finally feel like we are getting somewhere with him and it is WONDERFUL!  YAY

I had to share our wonderful news with you before I did one more thing today!

How this face could have put me through what he did for the last 24 hours is beyond me?! I can handle meltdowns. I almost feel like I'm a professional at it. I've been trained by professionals to deal with them so why was I in tears today? Lucas didn't sleep for two days! Which means, I didn't sleep for two days. He has never slept right but every once in a while he goes through these times where he doesn't sleep at all for reasons beyond me. Because of the stomach bug a few days ago, he didn't really eat that much for the last few days, which is another normal issue, so that in itself was enough to bring on a meltdown. The combination of the sleep deprivation and hunger from being sick made me witness a whole new level of meltdown that I didn't know existed! It was so bad that I actually called and took him to the pediatrician to make sure there wasn't something seriously wrong with him. He's has meltdowns all of the time but they've never lasted more than an hour. This one lasted for 24 hours with no sleep! My hands were shaking it was so bad. He has a molar tooth that just broke through the gum. He is ultra sensitive to pain and she said it could be the cause of the entire event. When he gets like this it breaks my heart! I just want to comfort him like most Mothers can comfort their children but he is inconsolable. I think because he can't communicate it frustrates him even more. He kept saying Boo Boo, hup, hup! (hup is help) That's as far as it goes. He can't tell you were he hurts, or even point to where it hurts. He just stares and says the same thing over and over again. I think it overwhelms me so much because as a Mother I should automatically know but I don't. As hard as I try to understand what he's trying to say I just can't figure it out.

This is the reason why I started this blog.  To let other parents know what I've been through so they know that they aren't alone and to get responses and support from parents who've gone through it and made it out alive!  LOL

NOTE TO SELF:  STOP ASKING GOD FOR PATIENCE!

Missing in action!

Lucas had a very good day today.   No meltdowns, very loving, making good eye contact with Mom.    His behavioral specialist (I adore her) convinced us to go to this event that Early Intervention will be holding tomorrow for families who are in the program.  It should be a really nice day to meet with other Moms and have Lucas play with children that are going through the same thing.  They will have games and activities for the children to get involved with.  I'm really looking forward to going.  I'll take pictures and post them tomorrow.

He can be very sneaky sometimes and I should have known he was up to something when I DIDN'T hear him banging, throwing, or smashing something. LOL  I heard his normal screams of joy and pitter patter of his little feet on my kitchen floor and looked over to see him diaper less running through the house.  Yes, he took his diaper off and hid it somewhere, yet to be located!  We've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find where he stashed it!  He likes to hide things.  We find things that he hides all over the house.  When we do find his hidden gems, we usually just leave them there,  because he knows that they are there.  His stash being missing could send him into a meltdown so we just leave it alone for now.  We're hoping that he tells us where his diaper is by checking on his stash tonight.   He usually waits to check on his things while we're not looking.   I wonder if that's part of the disorder or if its just his personality.

I've added some of his artwork that he's been working on with his OT in the Picture section of the blog.  They are really cute so please take a look if you get a chance.

Wish us luck on finding our, hopefully dry clean, missing diaper! LOL

Enlightened

I was invited to join the SPD blogger Network today.  It's a bunch of parents blogging and giving information about their lives and struggles raising children with Sensory Processing Disorder, their button is on the front page.   I had to write a short description about my blog and it rushed so many feelings to the surface about the craziness of this illness.  I can tell you the mere thought of being out in public with Lucas almost paralyzes me.  The lights, activity, buzzing, and everything is just always way to much for him to handle.  The meltdowns are unbearable.  I hope someone reading this who makes buttons takes my advice and starts making buttons that read "I'm not bad I have SPD". The stares and shakes of the head sometimes makes my head want to pop off.  This struggle has been a hard one but there is hope.  I sometimes forget and feel very fortunate to have other parents to go to who understand what its like to have a child like Lucas.  Who've been there.  Who worry about how their little lives will be some day.

I have a lot of new things that will be added to the site.  It's definitely a work in progress and want to thank everyone who is following Lucas's story. It means a great deal to me and our family knowing you care!

Not such a good day for bubbles : (

Lucas had therapy yesterday with his behavioral therapist and had a huge meltdown with her because a bubble popped on his arm and got wet. Wow, what a set back that was for him. He seemed ok with bubbles for the longest time but she said that's all part of the sensory disorder. I feel so bad for him when little things like that throw him off. His nana came over to visit and I think her head was spinning when she left. LOL He is a firecracker sometimes.

I'll get into the whole story about the pediatrician fiasco soon but now he's at a new peds office and will be visiting them for the first time today to have his eyes checked. The therapists think he may have a vision issue so off we go.

I'm new at the whole blogging think so bare with me while I learn. As always I ask for any prayers that you can offer to help him deal with things until he can start to communicate his frustration.
